The Citizens Support Team is a group of uniformed volunteers from the community that assists the police department with special events and emergency situations and, while performing neighborhood patrol, acts as additional eyes and ears in the community. Trained by the Leesburg Police Department in traffic direction techniques, the volunteers help with traffic control during parades and other special events and often are called up for emergency traffic duty during fires, serious traffic accidents, and hazardous materials incidents or bomb threat situations. The team members also provide safety information and child DNA identification kits at school and other children’s events. These volunteers also provide additional vehicle patrols in the community and report back any suspicious activity. They take no law enforcement action but act solely as observers while officers are en route. In most incidents, these volunteers observe undetected and update officers on descriptions of vehicles and/or suspects and give direction of travel, etc. Their assistance has led to numerous arrests of persons who may have escaped had they not been under Support Team surveillance.

Holidays with the Cops

The Leesburg Police Citizen’s Support Team Holidays with the Cops program (a 501c3 Nonprofit) has been serving Leesburg children and their families during the holiday season since 2010. 

The purpose of this program is to ensure that Leesburg children and their families, who are experiencing a financial crisis, have an opportunity for a happier holiday season.  The program also allows for Leesburg law enforcement to engage with our local community on a personal level.  Each child that is selected to participate in the program is paired with an LPD Officer, provided dinner at a local restaurant in a group setting, and then driven to Target to shop!  Each child receives a gift card containing donated funds which they then use to purchase gifts from their holiday wish list.  That evening, after the children have finished shopping volunteers wrap all of the presents and deliver them to the children’s homes. 

Since 2010, this program has served countless Leesburg children and their respected families.  In addition to the traditional shopping for gifts, the program has also purchased a car for a family in need, paid utility bills, and during the pandemic has supplied families with much need food and basic necessities for everyday life. 

This program is supported solely by gracious donations from Town of Leesburg Employees, Leesburg Police Officers and their families, community members, and local business. With continued donations we will continue to be able to support more local children and families in their time of need. We are extremely thankful for all of our community donors!
