In 1991, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) published a regulation to control lead and copper in drinking water, called the Lead and Copper Rule (LCR). In 2021, the EPA updated and revised its Lead and Copper Rule (LCRR), strengthening regulations for reducing lead from drinking water to better protect children and communities.

LCRR mandates that water utilities nationwide increase tap water testing and create a service line database to check for the presence of lead pipes in water systems, and in elementary schools and daycares. Service lines carry water from the public water main into homes and buildings.carr tanks cropped

Leesburg has been monitoring its water for lead and copper since 1991 and has always met EPA standards. The annual water quality report is a resource to learn more about Leesburg’s water quality efforts.

Information on lead in drinking water is available from the EPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791 or at www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

As required by the LCRR, Leesburg is asking some water service customers to identify their private service line material to improve our overall inventory. We ask that you find where your water service line enters your property, usually in the basement or crawl space, and do a few tests on the pipe to determine its material. We thank you for your cooperation in this program to improve our inventory and help us with future lead line replacement efforts.
