Leesburg, VA (April 10, 2024) – The Leesburg Tree Commission is launching a new initiative that will help restore the tree canopy in Leesburg.
The “Treesburg Initiative” allows residents to plant a tree and record it using a geographic information system (GIS) map, which can be updated annually to track its growth. Once the tree has been planted, its location, along with a photo, can be uploaded using the online GIS system. Updates can be made annually to track your tree’s growth.
“In recent years, there has been a reduction in Leesburg’s tree canopy with a loss of many trees due to insect and disease infestation, tornado damage, as well as development for housing and retail,” said Leesburg Tree Commission Chair Earl Hower. “The Town’s Tree Commission, along with the support from our Environmental Advisory Commission, continues to recognize the value of trees as they make our community livable for all by encouraging new tree plantings.”
Residents are encouraged to pick up a free native tree seedling, from booth #313, during the
34th Annual Flower & Garden Festival, which will take place Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21. About 1,500 seedlings will be available.
Residents will also have the opportunity to receive a free, potted tree, from the event parking lot at Ida Lee, when the Town recognizes Arbor Day on Saturday, April 27. The first 200 residents will receive planting and care instructions along with information on how to share their tree planting efforts online.
The “Treesburg Initiative” will be discussed in more detail during an upcoming “Live in Leesburg” on Friday, April 12 at 12:30 p.m. You can also learn more by visiting
