The Town of Leesburg’s Sustainability Program aims to support healthy living with economic opportunity and a sense of community for both current and future generations. Our priorities include:
- Creating strategies for both residents and government operations to reduce our impact on the environment
- Reducing waste sent to landfills or incinerators
- Increasing energy efficiency in government operations, and achieving goals outlined in the energy efficiency conservation strategy
- Creating sources of renewable energy and purchasing alternative fuels
- Creating a resilient community that can withstand extreme weather events
- Supporting a healthy urban forest
- Reducing reliance on automobile trips by creating more a walkable community and encourage public transit and bike travel
- Ensuring everyone has access to healthy local foods
- Ensuring everyone has access to green space
- Making sustainability easier to achieve for all segments of the population

Government Operations
The Town of Leesburg's Environmental Advisory Commission has spearheaded many environmental initiatives for the town. To Learn more about the work they do visit their webpage.
In May of 2023, The Town established its Executive Steering Committee for Sustainable Government Operations. The vision for the program is to efficiently manage town resources that meet the needs of all our residents while minimizing impacts on the environment. The committee is made up from leadership in key departments including Community Development, Town Manager's Office, Public Works and Utilities. This team is responsible for recommending goals and implementing actions to achieve those goals.
