Storm Sewer Maintenance and Repair:

The Street Maintenance Division is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the storm sewer system in the Town of Leesburg. Part of the Town's MS4 Permit requires that storm drains, inlets, and outfalls be properly maintained so as to prevent stormwater pollution to the maximum extent practical. Residents and communities benefit from the proper maintenance of such facilities with cleaner waterways and reduced backups in the system which can lead to localized flooding. Street Maintenance Division staff assist with the inspections of facilities and ensure that regular maintenance and cleaning is performed to assure proper function of the system.

Residents are reminded to not sweep things into the storm sewer system, as this is a violation of Chapter 14 of the Town Code, which regulates stormwater in the Town of Leesburg. Do not sweep or direct anything except stormwater into the storm sewer system! This includes (but is not limited to) trash, leaves, grass clippings, motor oil, automotive fluids, fertilizer, pesticides, and pet waste.

Street SweepingStreet Sweeper

Street Sweeping provides two primary benefits to the Town. The more obvious benefit is the collection and removal of paper, leaves, and other visible debris that collect in the gutters. This debris can block storm water facilities, causing localized flooding during heavy rains. An equally important, but less visible benefit is the removal of metal particles and other hazardous waste products left by passing vehicles. Although they are virtually invisible, these particles can be extremely harmful to fish and other wildlife if they reach our creeks, streams, ponds and lakes. Street sweeping is an effective method of removing both the large and microscopic pollutants that collect on Town streets. This sweeping also serves as one of our Best Management Practices (BMP) to control and improve water quality. Motorized sweeping removes an average of 1,000 cubic yards of debris from the Town's 251 lane miles of paved roadways before it goes into the storm drains.

Please note the Street Sweeper schedule below:
Monday: Historical district, North West (will also start in North East if time allows)
Tuesday: Outside the Bypass, North East
Wednesday: Inside the Bypass, North East
Thursday: Finish North East
Friday: Historical district downtown, North West

For more information regarding this best management practices, please visit our Water Quality Management and Stormwater Management page or contact the Town of Leesburg Department of Public Works at 703-771-2790.
