There are many different ways to find out about emergencies, and staying informed is a key preparedness activity. Below are a number of options for staying connected.

Alert Loudoun

The Town of Leesburg partners with Loudoun County to leverage the Alert Loudoun System for emergency notifications. The Alert Loudoun system allows residents who sign up to receive messages through multiple methods, such as text message, phone call, and email. Some best practices when signing up include:

  1. Add multiple different delivery methods (cell phone, home phone, email, pager, TTY device) to ensure you will receive messages in a format that suits your needs.
  2. Add locations of places you frequently visit (home, office, kids school, etc.). This geo-targeting feature will ensure that you receive specific messages about locations you are interested in.
  3. Sign up for additional optional messaging to stay up-to-date regarding traffic, town news and other information.

Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA)

Leesburg Emergency Management also can coordinate with Loudoun County to issue a Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA). This type of alert is for imminent emergency situations and will include actionable information. This is the technology utilized to issue AMBER Alerts and Tornado Warnings and utilizes cellphone towers to deliver messages to capable cellphone devices. No prior registration is required to receive a WEA.

NOAA Weather Radios

The National Weather Service maintains a network of radio transmitters that are used to issue severe weather alerts, and can also be used to support non-weather related emergency alerts as well. NOAA Weather Radio receivers are available for purchase, and can be configured to receive alerts for Loudoun County by programming a specific code.

Broadcast Media

News media, both television and radio, can provide emergency alert notifications. In the Northern Virginia air, residents can tune to either WTOP 103.5 mHz or WETA 90.9 mHz in the event of an emergency.
