Reconstructed Virts Corner Intersection |
Project Description: Virts Corner is the intersection of South King Street (Route 15), Masons Lane and Gleedsville Road at the southern corporate limits of the Town. The previous “K”-shaped intersection was controlled by three stop signs on Masons Lane and Gleedsville Road. The unconventional geometry of the intersection tended to cause driver confusion, which resulted in safety and capacity issues. Traffic volumes have increased significantly due to the opening of a new interchange on the Dulles Greenway at Battlefield Parkway.
This project improved the Virts Corner intersection by realigning both Masons Lane and Gleedsville Road and installing a new traffic signal. Masons Lane was realigned for a right-angle intersection with South King Street with a new traffic signal. Gleedsville Road was realigned to intersect with Masons Lane further away from South King Street. That intersection is controlled by a stop sign. Turn lanes were also added to South King Street.
A new stormwater management pond was constructed between South King Street and relocated Gleedsville Road to control and treat runoff. A new gateway sign was also constructed for northbound Route 15 traffic entering the Town.
Funding for the project was primarily from Virginia Department of Transportation Revenue Sharing funds and from Loudoun County Gas Tax.
Project Status: The Virts Corner intersection of South King Street and Masons Lane opened on December 18, 2013.
