Disabled On-Street Parking Space on a Residential Street Application
Persons with disabilities may request signage for a designated disabled on-street parking space in front of their home on a residential street. This disabled parking space is not reserved exclusively for the resident who requested it but will be available for vehicles with a DMV disabled license plate or placard.
The following procedure are to be followed regarding requests for disabled on-street parking spaces on a residential street:
- Resident is to fill out an application and provide the Town with a copy of their vehicle registration for disabled license plates, or placard from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Town staff will approve or reject each application after careful review of the following factors:
- Availability of off-street parking
- Number of on-street parking spaces adjacent to the residence
- Number of existing disabled parking spaces on the block
- If an application is rejected, the resident can appeal this decision to the Town Manager. If deemed necessary, the Town Manager may forward the request to the Residential Traffic Commission for additional input before supporting or overturning the original decision
- If an application is approved, Town staff will install a disabled parking sign in front of the applicant’s residence. All applications are to be renewed by the applicant before January 1st of each year. Applications initially approved after June 1st shall be renewed before the end of the following year. If the applicant fails to renew their application, it will be assumed that the disabled parking sign is no longer necessary, and the sign will be scheduled for removal.
